Suspect linked to identity theft operation

SAN ANTONIO –

A 31-year-old man is facing a charge of tampering with a governmental record in connection with what authorities describe as an identity and check theft operation.

Charges were filed against Gus Villarreal on Monday.

An arrest warrant affidavit stated that a member of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service contacted San Antonio police detectives on June 4, saying they had two suspects in custody who they found in a stolen car with stolen checks and fake drivers licenses.

Investigators interviewed one of the suspects, a woman, who told them she had stolen the checks from mailboxes, the affidavit stated.

They believe that she and Villarreal then made phony licenses using their own pictures but other people’s personal information on them, the affidavit stated.

Police said they also seized a laptop computer that had other people’s identifying information on it, the affidavit stated.

Although the affidavit does mention the female suspect by name, no age or other identifying information is given about her.
