Seniors gathered at the Sylvia Ross Home in Bangor for some tips on avoiding identity theft.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Troy Morton delivered a presentation on identity protection.

He advised seniors to not give out personal information.

He also noted identity theft awareness is useful for everybody.

“We continue to give tips about not giving out information, making sure that were shredding information,” says Chief Deputy Troy Morton with the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.  “If a vendor or some organization wants your funds today, they’ll take your funds tomorrow.  We always suggest that people take time to check out who they’re providing this information to.”

Morton says if someone does steal or attempt to steal your identity, be sure to report it to local law enforcement.
