Saline teen charged in homicide of MSU student has identity theft case adjourned

The 18-year-old Saline man charged in the death of Michigan State University student Dustyn Frolka appeared in the Washtenaw County Trial Court Tuesday on an unrelated identity theft case, which was adjourned due to the murder case.

Tyrel Bredernitz is charged with identity theft, obtaining identity information with intent to commit identity theft, stealing a financial transaction device and larceny in a building for the case, stemming from incidents in Pittsfield Township.

Bredernitz appeared briefly in court where his defense attorney asked for a received an adjournment from Judge Donald Shelton, who cited the the “more serious case” in Clinton County as a reason.

Bredernitz is one of three Saline teens charged with beating Frolka with brass knuckles and tossing him from a moving vehicle on Interstate 69 in Clinton County’s Bath Township last February.

Frolka later died at Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital from his injuries.

Bredernitz, 18-year-old Samantha Grigg and 16-year-old Brendan Heim are charged with felony murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery in Frolka’s death.

Bredernitz is next expected in court on April 28 in that case.

In the Washtenaw County case, he’s accused of stealing a credit card and cash from a woman who allowed him to stay in her home after he was kicked out of his parents’ house. He denied the theft in an interview with police.

In December, a package was found in Bredernitz’s locker at Liberty School in Saline, where he was attending the Saline Alternative Education program. The package was addressed to a non-student and the PayPal account used to purchase the item was linked to Bredernitz.

The purchase was flagged as probable unauthorized credit card use.

Shelton adjourned the pretrial until June 3.

“We’ll see where we’re at then,” he said.
