Protect yourself from identity theft by shredding documents

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Better Business Bureau and its partners will hold their bi-annual Secure Your ID Day on Saturday, June 14, in Solon and Westlake.

Residents and small businesses are encouraged to attend the event and take a key step in identity protection by shredding and properly disposing of sensitive paper documents as well as CDs and floppy discs.

“In 2013, someone was the victim of identify fraud every 2 seconds. Properly destroying documents that contain private information you don’t want getting into the hands of crooks is an important first step to fighting identity theft,” said BBB President, David Weiss.

According to Javelin Strategy Research, the number of identity fraud victims jumped to 13.1 million in 2013. That’s an increase of 500,000 from 2012 and the second highest number of victims since Javelin began conducting its annual study in 2004. Victims incurred losses totalling $18 billion.

Identity theft is largely a crime of access,” added Weiss. “Along with shredding sensitive documents, private information should not be carelessly provided to telemarketers or submitted online to unfamiliar businesses.”
