Paper shredding events in Hadley and Amherst to help prevent identity theft

HADLEY — Consumers wishing to protect themselves against identity theft are invited to two upcoming community paper shredding events.

The Hadley Community Shred Event will be held Friday, June 20, at the Hadley Senior Center at 46 Middle St. from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Amherst event will be Saturday, June 21 at the PeoplesBank at 56 Amity St. from 9 a.m. to noon.

Residents of nearby towns are welcome at both events, which are free of charge.

The document shredding events are sponsored by the Northwestern District Attorney‘s office.

Identity theft is a burgeoning industry. According to the Federal Trade Commission, Americans lost over $1.6 billion to fraud in 2013. The FTC has ranked identity theft as its top consumer complaint for more than a decade.

Experts recommend that consumers shred any documents revealing social security numbers, instead of throwing them into trash or recycling bins.

Other documents that should be shredded include receipts, credit offers, credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, checks, bank statements, expired charge cards and copies of tax returns.
