Ore. Department of Revenue has new tool to report ID theft

SALEM, Ore. – There’s a new resource for Oregonians who are victims of identity theft.

The Oregon Department of Revenue website now includes an online form for people to quickly report identity theft.

The department says a growing number of federal tax returns are being filed by identity thieves.

The On Your Side Investigators last week spoke with a Milwaukie woman who was the victim of identity theft. Lynda Dietz said someone e-filed using her social security number.

ID theft and tax fraud can go hand-in-hand,” said JoAnn Martin, Personal Tax and Compliance Division Administrator at the department of revenue. “We want it to be as easy as possible for potential victims to protect their tax accounts.”

The department says it expects to receive more ID theft reports as the April 15 tax deadline approaches.

“File as soon as you can and if you suspect you’ve been a victim of identity theft, notify us immediately,” Martin said.

The ID theft page also includes links to information about filing reports with the IRS and credit reporting agencies.

Taxpayers without Internet access can submit ID theft reports by calling 503-947-2000.
