Identity theft ring busted in Morristown

Six people accused in an identity theft ring that served undocumented immigrants in the Morristown area have been arrested as part of a federal investigation, prosecutors said Monday.

Elias Reyes, Mario L. Lopez, Bobbie Arvizu, Jose Diaz Ortiz, William Perez-Perez and Jesus Orduna-Valencia appeared in U.S. District Court in Greeneville on charges related to the production of false documents Monday, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Bill Killian’s office.

Perez-Perez and Orduna-Valencia also are charged with illegal re-entry into the U.S. after a previous deportation.

The arrests followed raids by the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this month at two businesses and a home in Morristown.

Reyes, Lopez, Arvizu and Ortiz (aka Chepe) were involved in the production or transfer of documents such as Social Security cards, driver’s licenses, immigration papers and birth certificates, prosecutors said.

Arvizu is accused of selling victims’ identities to produce the fake documents. Ortiz allegedly sold the documents from a local market he ran.

All six are scheduled to appear at preliminary hearings Aug. 18.

More details as they develop online and in Tuesday’s News Sentinel.
