Two men indicted for their role in a Tijuana, Mexico-based identity theft ring were said to have wired illicit funds to at least one bank account in Calexico belonging to an unidentified co-conspirator. The two men are charged with hacking into the computer servers of a major U.S. mortgage broker to steal personal information and funds from the accounts of 4,200 victims.

The conspiracy to defraud customers of the unidentified brokerage firm dates back to at least July 2011, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Customers’ names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, addresses, assets, tax information and driver’s licenses were all allegedly stolen between December 2012 and June 2013.

Jason Ray Bailey, 38, of Mammoth Lakes, and Victor Alejandro Fernandez, 38, of Chula Vista are both charged with one charge each for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one charge each for computer hacking, a press release stated. No co-conspirators in the Imperial Valley have been identified, a FBI spokesperson said.

After hacking into the brokerage firm’s servers, members of the conspiracy were said to have fraudulently taken control of the victims’ accounts. The conspirators then would allegedly wire funds from the victims’ accounts to coconspirators’ U.S. bank accounts in the San Diego and Calexico areas, a press release stated. Several of these wire transactions were more than $20,000 and $30,000 each.

Both men face up to 35 years in prison and fines of up to $1.25 million.
