Ex-ALDOC workers sentenced in identity theft

Two former Alabama Department of Corrections officers have been sentenced for their roles in a stolen identity tax refund scheme.

Bryant Thompson was sentenced to 120 months in prison, and Quincy Walton was sentenced to 84 months.

Thompson and Walton were convicted of conspiracy to defraud the United States in January 2014.

Thompson also was convicted of seven counts of wire fraud and seven counts of aggravated identity theft, while Walton also was convicted of one count of aggravated identity theft.

Thompson was assigned to the shift clerk position at a state prison, a position that gave him access to the personal identifying information to every inmate in the custody of the ALDOC, according to evidence that was introduced at trial.

Thompson and former co-worker Walton used that information to file false income tax returns, evidence showed.

Investigators tracked the Internet Protocol addresses that were used to file the fraudulent returns.

One was tied directly to Thompson’s residence at the time, while others could be connected to the two by circumstantial evidence, prosecutors said.

The stolen tax refunds were directed to debit cards and checks that were delivered to addresses associated with the two in Montgomery and Prattville, evidence showed.

Several of the checks were cashed at a local retail store by Walton’s uncle and by a local check casher, according to evidence at the trial.

During that time, Thompson purchased a new paint job and rims for his SUV and later purchased a BMW, according to prosecutors.

Thompson and Walton filed more than 180 false tax returns and claimed more than $750,000 in tax refunds, evidence showed.

The Internal Revenue Service identified many of the returns as fraudulent, but it was tricked into issuing a total of $176,114 in improper refunds, court record state.

Thompson and Walton have been ordered to pay that amount in addition to their prison sentences.
