DAN McINTOSH: Guarding against identity theft

Minnesota’s County Attorneys work cooperatively with law enforcement agencies and the public to make our communities safer. In light of recent events in the news, concerns about identity theft are very common.


Identity theft is defined as stealing someone else’s personal information for the purpose of obtaining credit, medical care, prescriptions, government benefits, phone or utility service, or anything else of value. In 2012, there were 369,132 complaints of identity theft in the United States, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Persons over the age of 60 made up for nearly 20 percent of all victims.
