Avondale woman convicted of tax fraud, ID theft

A federal jury in Phoenix has convicted a former tax return preparer on 43 counts of wire fraud, false statements and identity theft.

Latoya Morehead, of Avondale, was found guilty on April 30 following a three-week trial.

The jury deliberated for about three hours before finding Morehead guilty on all 43 counts.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 30.

Morehead was indicted on Sept. 5, 2012. The indictment alleged the woman committed the crimes while working as a tax return preparer at various companies.

The indictment claimed Morehead failed to report income on her own tax returns and used personal and financial information of former clients to prepare tax returns. The former clients affected never received tax refunds, the indictment alleged.

This case was handled by IRS Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
