3 members of Florida ID theft gang arrested in BR

Three members of a Florida-based identity-theft gang are in jail after burglarizing three cars at recreational parks in Baton Rouge and then trying to cash checks they stole from the cars, said Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

John Wright, 33, Curtis Standley, 34, and Tony Lester, 27, all of Pompano Beach, Fla., were booked late Saturday in Parish Prison on counts of simple burglary, theft, criminal damage to property, and possession of burglary tools.

Standley later admitted to deputies that the three men are members of the “Felony Lane Gang” and they came to Baton Rouge to burglarize vehicles and steal identities, Hicks said.

The vehicle burglaries included one parked at a BREC park in Oak Hill’s Subdivision Friday night and two others at BREC’s Burbank Soccer Complex Saturday morning, Hicks said.

Later Saturday, a woman attempted to cash a check at the Chase Bank on Corporate Boulevard, but left the check and ID behind when the bank took too long to process it, Hicks said. The check and the ID were both reported stolen, Hicks said.

The Sheriff’s Office was provided a description of the woman’s car and soon after the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle of that description. Those in the car were detained and taken to East Baton Rouge Parish, Hicks said.

Deputies searched the car and found two chisel-like tools used for breaking glass and receipts showing the transfer of money to individuals in Florida, Hicks said.

Wright is also facing five more counts of simple burglary, theft and criminal damage to property in connection with vehicle burglaries that occurred in February 2014 in the south Baton Rouge area, Hicks said.
